Liverpool and Real Madrid have crossed paths frequently on the pitch in recent years, including in the Champions League last 16 this season.
According to reports, they were also engaged in a transfer tussle for Aurelien Tchouameni last summer before the French midfielder opted for a move to the Bernabeu in a deal that could reach €100 million.
Tchouameni enjoyed an encouraging start to life at Real Madrid and admirably filled the void left by Casemiro’s departure to Manchester United.
However, the 23-year-old has struggled for game time in recent months and been omitted from the starting lineup, prompting speculation about his future at the club.
Liverpool are thought to retain an interest in Tchouameni should he become available. Football insider Graeme Bailey claimed on the Talking Transfers podcast that the Reds “are just making it known to Real and to the player himself, you know, if you want to come to England, we’re here. We still like you, we still rate you.”
While it may be premature for Real Madrid to consider offloading Tchouameni, his difficulties in adapting during his first season in Spain are unsurprising given his youth. The challenges he has faced will ultimately help him develop into a better player.
Liverpool have had an inconsistent campaign but are finishing strongly in their bid to qualify for the Champions League.
They are believed to be targeting at least three midfield signings this summer to revamp an area of the team that has underperformed. Veterans like James Milner are expected to move on, with Brighton interested in the 36-year-old.
Aurelien Tchouameni on Liverpool’s Radar for Midfield Overhaul
Having apparently missed out on top target Jude Bellingham, Liverpool have turned their attention to Tchouameni. Bailey said:
“This a player who Liverpool love they almost got him but Real Madrid came in. The lure of the Bernabeu was too much.”
While Tchouameni’s first season at Real Madrid has been uneven, he has still made 21 La Liga starts and impressed in flashes.
Football analyst Kiyan Sobhani described the Frenchman as a “beast”. Tchouameni ranks highly for interceptions, aerial duels won, and clearances, with his style earning praise from France teammate Paul Pogba.
Compared to Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, Tchouameni has a superior pass completion rate (93% to 82.9%) and makes twice as many tackles per game. His attributes suggest he could be an influential signing for the Reds as they look to overhaul their midfield.
