PSG and Newcastle in Tug-of-War over Ferland Mendy

Football heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United are reportedly going head-to-head in a tug-of-war over Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy.

According to whispers coming out of Spain, the 27-year-old left-back has emerged as a top target for the French and English clubs in the looming summer transfer window.

Mendy’s career at the Bernabeu has been plagued with injury setbacks since he made the switch from Lyon to Real Madrid in 2019.

While the French international was one of La Liga’s standout fullbacks in his first couple of seasons, his performances have nose-dived over the last 18 months due to persistent fitness issues.

The defender has been in and out of Los Blancos’ starting eleven and is currently sidelined with a muscle problem.

However, Mendy’s injury record has clearly not deterred PSG and Newcastle, who are both keen to lure the left-back away from the Spanish capital.

Newcastle, in particular, are on the hunt for a new left-back, with Matt Targett facing an uncertain future at St James’ Park and Dan Burn being more defensively-minded.

The Magpies want an attack-minded fullback who can add another dimension to their offense, making Mendy an appealing option. Newcastle will have their work cut out competing with the financial might of PSG.

The Parisians also have left-back issues of their own to address. While Nuno Mendes is viewed as a long-term solution, veteran Juan Bernat looks to have no future at the Parc des Princes.

Mendy would provide cover and competition for Mendes, making him a tempting target for the Ligue 1 champions.

PSG seem primed to pull out all the stops to sign the 27-year-old, though Newcastle will be hoping to gazump the French giants to the Real Madrid man’s signature.

The race is on between PSG and Newcastle to land Ferland Mendy. With the transfer window about to swing open, all eyes will be on whether the French powerhouses or ambitious English side will emerge victorious from this battle.
